Hurricane Season is Coming: Be Ready
In Barbados and across the Caribbean, hurricane season runs from June to November. Preparing in advance can help protect your home, belongings, and loved ones. One of the first steps is to safeguard important documents. Keep essential items like passports, insurance policies, and property deeds in a waterproof, fireproof container. It’s also a good idea to make digital copies and store them securely online or on an external drive. Having a printed list of emergency contacts and account numbers in your emergency kit is also helpful.
Preparing your home is equally important. Inspect your roof for any loose tiles or shingles and secure them. Trim trees and remove any debris that could become dangerous in high winds. Make sure your windows are protected with storm shutters or plywood and clear your gutters and drains to prevent flooding.
Now is also the time to review your insurance coverage. Check that your homeowners or renters' insurance is current and includes protection for hurricanes and flooding. Take photos or videos of your home and valuables for documentation and be sure you understand your policy’s deductibles and what is or isn’t covered.
Stocking up on essentials is another key step. Have at least three days’ worth of food, water, and medication on hand. Include flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, and a battery-powered radio in your emergency supplies. If you have pets, make sure you have enough food and supplies for them as well.
Finally, make a family emergency plan. Decide on a safe meeting place and evacuation route in case you need to leave your home. Share the plan with all household members and practice it. It’s also wise to keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full during hurricane season. Preparedness brings peace of mind, and by taking these steps now, you’ll be ready to weather the storm and protect what matters most.
